Book Club Field Trip

July 13th 2024

Join us for our first-ever book club field trip to the Pryor Mountain Mustang Sanctuary outside of Billings, MT, on July 13. The center will provide a brief presentation, followed by a self-guided tour to see the site and horses.

Last fall, we delved into "Desert Chrome" by Kathryn Wilder, a powerful narrative intertwining grief, motherhood, and a return to the desert. Wilder's story on the Colorado Plateau, bordering a mustang herd, celebrates America's mustangs and explores ways to protect them and their habitats in the arid West.

Inspired by these themes and our love for horses, we decided to organize this field trip to experience firsthand the sanctuary's connection to the natural world and the wild mustangs that inhabit it.

DESERT CHROME

This book is a testimony to the healing power of wildness.

Overview

The Women in Ranching Book Club was started by April Martin Chalfant as a way to connect with one another and explore new perspectives —using books as a vehicle to spark conversation.

These gatherings are informally guided by April who will lead discussions related to the chosen literature. “This is just another way for us to show up for each other,” says April “Sometimes the tangential conversations are just as interesting as the book!”

As always, we encourage participants to order books from their local bookstores, wherever that may be. Below are a few bookstores we like to support!

Birch Bark Books  - Minneapolis, MN

The House of Books  - Billings, MT

Barjon’s Books and Curiosities - Billings, MT

The Country Bookshelf - Bozeman, MT
